A Review of the HOS Grandmaster vs. HOS Grandmaster Regal Series Chessmen

The House of Staunton Grandmaster Series and the Grandmaster Regal Series. Both sets have a lacquered finish that gives them durability and makes them aesthetically pleasing. However, I must say that I prefer the Grandmaster Regal Series a bit more because the felt on the bottom of the pieces is of higher quality, and it feels more luxurious when moving the pieces around the board.

The Grandmaster Series and the Grandmaster Regal Series are both perfect for tournament play. I have used them in many tournaments, and I have been impressed with their durability and performance. The pieces have a good weight to them, and they catch the light beautifully, making for a nice contrast on the chessboard.

When it comes to casual play or traveling, I use the House of Staunton Tournament Bag to carry the tournament pieces. The bag is perfect for keeping pens, snacks, tournament books, and even reading glasses. I have dropped the set on the floor, and there wasn't even a scratch. It is not the fanciest bag out there, but it is the one I use to carry my tournament pieces, and it serves its purpose well.

Overall, I highly recommend the House of Staunton Grandmaster Series and the Grandmaster Regal Series for those who want durability and aesthetic beauty in a chess set. They are perfect for tournament play, and the felt on the bottom of the Grandmaster Regal Series pieces makes them feel even more luxurious. Note that this is my opinion and I purchased everything shown.

We would love to hear about your favorite chess sets for tournament play! In the comments of the video, Kuboxooki shared that they gravitate towards their German Knight set and Chavet set for their nicely balanced and professional feel. Chowa's favorite tournament set is a plastic set from House of Staunton, specifically the Bobby Fischer black/white set. Chris Walker enjoys using the Fischer Spassky Championship set in Ebonized Boxwood, and also likes to bring a reproduction Lardy set to tournaments. Chis also recently tried out the new Drueke Players Choice reproduction set, which may become his new favorite.
